Oh, and Zen, I think you missed my point. I am in favor of calling it Christmas too. I just don't think it's about religion anymore. I want to call it Christmas because that's what it has always been called. So, when people talk about removing the name Christmas because of some religious connotation, I think that's absurd. To me, it doesn't have that religious connotation. It is just a holiday I've always known as Christmas and I would like to keep it that way. If we go changing the name, then we are changing a part of America, and that does offend my sensibilities. That's what I meant when I said we were losing our national identity.

Also, I don't think it's shallow to observe Christmas if you don't observe the religious part. Like I said, it is a time for being with family and there's nothing shallow about that. close(-)

Christians can claim it is a religious holiday, but many Americans celebrate the non religious aspects of Christmas. For us, it is about gathering with family, sharing food and hospitality, displaying lights, and of course sharing gifts. I also don't consider it to be about the all mighty dollar. So, Americans have redefined Christmas, and in my opinion it is no longer a purely religious holiday. It is secular and the Christmas I observe is distinctly American. close(-)

I consider Christmas to be an almost secular holiday in America. Nearly all of us celebrate it, and we don't have to belong to any religion to celebrate it. So, when we do these things like change the name of the Christmas tree are we really striking a blow for religious diversity or are we shooting our own national traditions in the foot? close(-)
